Nehemiah 11
PART V (Nehemiah 11-13). The Population of Jerusalem and Judah. The Dedication of the Walls Internal Organisation.
Nehemiah 11:1-36. The Population of Jerusalem and Judah.—This section consists of lists of the dwellers in Jerusalem and in the provincial towns of Judah.
Nehemiah 11:1 f. The need of increasing the population of Jerusalem was obvious from what is said in Nehemiah 7:4, for the bulk of the people lived in the provincial towns and in the country villages (cf. Nehemiah 7:73).
Nehemiah 11:3-24. The lists here given enumerate the chief laymen dwelling in Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:3-9), the priests (Nehemiah 11:10-14), the Levites (Nehemiah 11:15-18; cf. 1 Chronicles 9:14-18), and the gatekeepers (Nehemiah 11:19); in Nehemiah 11:20-24 some miscellaneous notes are added.
Nehemiah 11:25-36. Then follows a geographical list of the provincial towns in which the children of Judah dwelt; Judan towns (Nehemiah 11:25-30), Benjaminite towns (Nehemiah 11:31-36).
