wrote. See note on Exodus 17:14, and App-47.
commandment. Hebrew "mouth", put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause) for what is spoken by it.
before Pi-hahiroth. Hebrew text and Revised Version = "before Hahiroth"; but this differs from the other two occurrences of the name (Exodus 14:2, Exodus 14:9), in all three of which it is Pi-hahiroth. A special various reading called Sevir (App-34) has the full name Pi-hahiroth in this verse. The Authorized Version has kept the Pi as well, and made it "before Pi-". It should, perhaps, read here, as in every other case in this chapter, "from Pi-hahiroth".
Bithmah. Compare Numbers 13:1-3. Whence the spies went to view the land: means "Juniper": well named for the evil tongues of the spies. Compare Psalms 120:3, Psalms 120:4.

Dibon-gad = Dibon of the tribe of Gad. Compare Numbers 21:30. So called because it was appropriated by Gad (Numbers 32:34); and to distinguish it from another Dibon given to Reuben (Joshua 13:15, Joshua 13:17).
Nebo. Where Moses died. Deuteronomy 32:49, Deuteronomy 32:50; Deuteronomy 34:1, Deuteronomy 34:5.

inhabitants of the land. Figure of speech Ellipsis (App-6) correctly supplied. Hebrew "land" is put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), for the inhabitants.
not drive out. Alas! they did not. Compare Joshua 13:13; Joshua 15:63; Joshua 16:10. Judges 1:19, Judges 1:21, Judges 1:28, Judges 1:29, Judges 1:30-36; Judges 2:1-5. See App-25.
