Verse 1

heads = rulers or princes.

children = sons.


Verse 2

vow a vow. Figure of speech Polyptoton (App-6) = make a solemn promise.

soul. Hebrew. nephesh (App-13), used in this chapter twelve times for the whole (responsible) person.

break = Hebrew profane.


Verse 3

and = or.

bind . . . a bond. Figure of speech Polyptoton = make a solemn bond.


Verse 4

shall stand = abideth firm. Compare Genesis 23:17, Genesis 23:20. Psalms 19:7. Isaiah 14:24; Isaiah 40:8. Jeremiah 44:29.


Verse 7

her. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, read "all her", as in Numbers 30:4.


Verse 9

divorced. Hebrew "put away [from her husband]". Compare Leviticus 21:7.


Verse 12

hath utterly made them void. Figure of speech Polyptoton (App-6). Hebrew "a making void he hath made them void". Figure of speech well represented by the word "utterly". See note on Genesis 26:28.


Verse 14

altogether, &c. Hebrew "a holding his peace, he held his peace". Figure of speech Polyptoton (App-6), well translated by "altogether".


Verse 15

iniquity. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6, for the punishment occasioned by it. Hebrew. "avah. App-44.
