Verse 1

the LORD. Hebrew Jehovah. App-4.

children = sons.

we. So written, but read "they". Some codices have "they", both written and read, with three early printed editions, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate.

melted. See note on Joshua 2:9, Joshua 2:11.

spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9.


Verse 2

said. See note on Joshua 3:7.

again . the second time. Not repeated as an act on the person, but on the nation on a second occasion (compare for this usage Isaiah 11:11 and Jude 1:5, implying that the rite was performed in Egypt. See verses: Joshua 5:4-7.


Verse 4

men. Hebrew, plural of "ish or "enosh. App-14.


Verse 6

People = nation. Some codices, with two early printed editions, read "generation",

obeyed not = hearkened not unto.


Verse 8

abode. 11th to 13th Abib.


Verse 9

rolled away = Hebrew gallothi. Hence Gilgal = rolling.


Verse 10

kept the passover. Some codices, with two early printed editions, and Manuscript of Aramaic, add "in the first [month]". The second of the ten Passovers recorded. See note on Exodus 12:28.


Verse 11

the morrow. Feast of unleavened bread ended 21st Abib at even, exactly forty years from Exodus 12:41.


Verse 12

fruit. produce.


Verse 13

when. Between 16th and 21st Abib.

a Man. Hebrew. "ish. App-14.


Verse 14

Captain, or Prince.

host = Israel as Jehovah's host. Compare Exodus 12:41.

worship. Therefore Divine. Compare Revelation 19:10; Revelation 22:9.

my Lord = A donai. App-4.


Verse 18

Loose thy shoe. Compare Exodus 3:5. The origin of a solemn Eastern custom of reverence observed to this day. Compare Exodus 3:5.

is holy. Hebrew "it [is] holy". See note on Exodus 3:5.
