Verse 1

when. After, not before. All true reformation begins within and works outward. Compare Philippians 1:2, Philippians 1:12, Philippians 1:13.

all Israel. See note on 2 Chronicles 30:1.

present = found.

cities. Jerusalem had been cleansed before the passover. Compare 2 Chronicles 30:14.

groves = the "Asherim. App-42.

children = sons.


Verse 2

the courses of the priests., 1 Chronicles 24:26.


Verse 3

the king's portion. Compare 2 Chronicles 32:27-29 and Num 18; Num 28; and Num 29.

written in the law. See App-47.


Verse 6

tithe. Authorized Version, 1611, read "tithes" (plural)

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4.

by heaps. Hebrew "heaps, heaps" = great heaps. Figure of speech Epizeuxis.


Verse 7

third . . . seventh: i.e. Sivan, Thammuz, Ah, Elul, Ethanim.

to lay the foundation: i.e. to begin to build up the heaps.


Verse 11

chambers = storehouses.


Verse 12

offerings = heave offerings. See note on Exodus 29:27, and App-43.

dedicated = holy. See note on Exodus 3:5.


Verse 13

God. Hebrew. Elohim.(with Art.) = the [true] God.


Verse 14

toward the east. Compare 1 Chronicles 9:18.

oblations = heave offerings, as in 2 Chronicles 31:12.

the most holy things. Compare Leviticus 2:3; Leviticus 6:17, Leviticus 6:25, Leviticus 6:29.

set office = office of trust.


Verse 16

according to. Some codices, with seven early printed editions, read "in".


Verse 17

congregation = assembly. See note on Genesis 28:3.

sanctified themselves in holiness: or, devoted themselves [as] a holy body. See note on Exodus 3:6.


Verse 19

priests. Some codices, with Syriac, read "priest".

were reckoned by genealogies: or, registered themselves.


Verse 21

And. A special various reading called Sevir (App-34) omits "And".
