Verse 1

Amaziah. Compare 2 Kings 14:1-3. Complementary to Kings (see App-56); verses: 2 Chronicles 25:5-10 and verses: 2 Chronicles 25:13-16 are additional.


Verse 3

established = confirmed.

killed the king (2 Chronicles 24:25, 2 Chronicles 24:26).


Verse 4

as it is written. Compare Deuteronomy 24:16.

in the law in the book of Moses. See App-47.

children = sons.

sin. Hebrew. chata". App-44.


Verse 7

a man of God. See App-49.

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4.

let not. For similar protests Compare 2 Chronicles 19:2; 2 Chronicles 20:37.

army = host.

Israel. These were mercenaries gathered out of the ten tribes, to be used against Edom (2 Chronicles 25:6).

not with. This is the measure by which our alliances of all kinds should be tried.

all the children of Ephraim = any of the sons of Ephraim. Of these were the kings of Israel.

Ephraim. Put here for the whole northern kingdom.


Verse 8

be strong. Figure of speech Eironeia. App-6.


Verse 9

army = troop.


Verse 11

valley of salt. South of the Dead Sea.

the children of Seir: i.e. the Edomites.


Verse 13

them: i.e. men, not villages.


Verse 14

set them up. For a similar action See 2 Chronicles 28:23.


Verse 15

sent unto him a prophet. When He might have sent a sore judgment.

deliver = rescue.


Verse 16

Art thou made of, &c. = Have we given thee to be of.

of the king's counsel = for counsellor to the king.

determined = counselled.


Verse 17

advice = counsel, as in 2 Chronicles 25:16. He took man's counsel, but not God's.

see = look. Idiom for desire to fight.


Verse 18

thistle = thorn. Compare 2 Kings 14:9.


Verse 21

saw. See note on "see" (2 Chronicles 25:17)


Verse 24

Obed-edom. He and his family were the Temple treasurers (1 Chronicles 26:15).

hostages. Hebrew "sons of securities".


Verse 26

are they not . . . ? Figure of speech Erotesis. App-6.


Verse 27

made a conspiracy = conspired a great conspiracy. Figure of speech Polyptoton.


Verse 28

the city of Judah = Jerusalem. The only occurrence of the expression. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac and Vulgate, read "the city of David".
