Verse 1

Rehoboam went. Compare 1 Kings 12:1-19.

all. "All" put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of the Whole) for the greater part or representatives.


Verse 2

Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Our acquaintance with him is assumed (1 Kings 11:26-40).


Verse 5

after three days: i.e. the third day (Compare 2 Chronicles 10:12).


Verse 9

advice = counsel.


Verse 12

as = according as.


Verse 14

made. So some codices, with six early printed editions, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate (as 1 Kings 12:14); but the current Hebrew text reads "I will make".


Verse 15

word, which He spake. Our acquaintance with 1 Kings 11:29-39 is taken for granted.


Verse 16

saw. Some codices, with seven early printed editions, read this word "saw", in the text.

your tents. Primitive text reads "your gods". One of the emendations of the Sopherim. See App-33, and compare 2 Samuel 20:1.

tents = homes. Compare 2 Samuel 18:17; 2 Samuel 19:8; 2 Samuel 20:1.


Verse 17

children = sons.

dwelt in the cities of Judah. See note on 1 Kings 12:17.


Verse 18

stoned him with stones. Figure of speech Polyptoton. See note on Leviticus 24:14.
