1 Chronicles 7
Now the sons of Issachar were = And to the sons of Issachar belonged. Issachar born 1746 B.C.
the sons of Tola. Descendants of younger sons are contrasted with his firstborn Uzzi (verses: 1 Chronicles 7:3-4). These names occur nowhere else, and prove Chronicles to be entirely independent.
in the days of David. When he numbered the people (2Sa 24).
three. In Genesis 46:21 there were ten. When Chronicles was written the others probably had become extinct. Even in Numbers 26:38 only five are mentioned. in 1 Chronicles 8:1, 1 Chronicles 8:2 only five are given.
children = sons.
Hushim, the sons of Aher = Hushim the son of another, that other being Dan (Genesis 46:23). Not named here. For reason, see note below, and on Genesis 49:17.
sons. Put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of the Whole), for "son".
Aher. Hebrew. "aher = another.
second: i.e. second son of Manasseh. Machir being the first.
daughters. Not sons (Numbers 27:1).
his sister: i.e. Gilead's sister.
Mahalah. Supply Figure of speech Ellipsis, "Mahalah [and Shemidah] and the sons". The name of one of the daughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 26:33).
they: i.e. the sons of Ephraim. A pre-Exodus raid, presuming perhaps on their descent from Joseph (Genesis 46:20), the governor of Egypt.
he = Ephraim. Born 1712. Compare Genesis 41:50.
Beriah. An ancestor of Joshua. Not to be confounded with Beriah of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:13), who made a reprisal on Gath; or with Beriah of Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30).
Gezer. See note on 1 Kings 9:15-17.
towns. Hebrew daughters. Put by Figure of speech Catachresis (App-6) for villages.
Gaza. Not the Gaza in Philistia assigned to Judah (Joshua 15:47).
